Discover AuScope facilities, data, software and services for researchers in academia, government and industry, and for everyone including policy makers, media professionals, educators, students, citizen scientists and members of the general public—in Australia and abroad.

AuScope for researchers

Are you looking for a research tool, data or service from a STEM domain beyond geoscience? Let us connect you with our NCRIS peers who make research tools, data and services available in other physical sciences, as well as supercomputing.

AuScope for everyone

  • AuScope is deeply connected across the Australian geoscience research ecosystem, in academia, government and industry through numerous collaborative national research infrastructure programs and projects. Our data underpins decisions at state and federal level in climate and environment and resources through partnerships with Geoscience Australia, CSIRO, State and Territory Geological Surveys, CRCs and Australian universities.

As such, upon request, we can coordinate timely, expert briefings on geoscience research developments across Australia to assist policy making activities in state government, federal government, council, NGOs and more.

AuScope is a trusted, apolitical and independent non-profit organisation that is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education and the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).Through NCRIS, we are also able to connect you to expertise in adjacent areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, including environmental, marine, agricultural, ecosystem, biological and archaeological areas, as well as supercomputing and data.

Please get in touch if you seek to better understand the science or developments on any Earth or (adjacent natural science) area, from critical minerals to groundwater, energy, geohazards, climate change and fundamental Earth system processes.

  • We have news for you! Please reach out anytime you need to speak to an expert or need help translating complex geoscience breakthroughs for the public.

  • The AuScope team is filled with enthusiastic scientists and science communicators who have knowledge to share in or for your lecture theatre and laboratory. Working on Australia’s natural resources, geohazards and fundamental Earth science challenges everyday—we’re passionate about explaining why geoscience matters for the future. We are also aware of great content that is being generated beyond our team in the national Earth science community, like the short film Rola (Stone) developed by Dr Marissa Betts on the importance of cross-cultural Earth science communciation today. If you would like to access expertise in the AuScope team or the wider Australian geoscience community please reach out, we’re ready to help you engage your students!

  • AuScope supports outreach all year round via workshops and educational resources at the Australian National University in the Australian Seismometers in Schools (AuSIS) program and The University of Sydney (Earthbyte). AuSIS is an outreach program that maintains 50 research quality broadband seismometers in schools around Australia and provides researchers with access to data form those instruments. At the same time, the AuSIS team based at the Australian National University work with educators and students at those schools to raise awareness of geoscience through observing dynamic Earth in motion. Meanwhile, the Earthbyte team introduces students to AuScope enabled GPlates software that enables plate tectonic reconstructions through deep time. The EarthByte team also participates in University of Sydney outreach events from time to time.

If you are seeking a bespoke outreach experience, please reach out.

  • AuScope offers and facilitates bespoke, place-based, and digital learning experiences for anyone in Australia who is curious about the cutting-edge research scientists who are investigating using AuScope facilities, data, and services today. Particularly during National Science Week (August) and Earth Science Week (October) each year. For example, in 2021, we collaborated with AIME - the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience - to bring an Earth science quiz to Indigenous students from the Adelaide Botanics Secondary School. In National Science Week 2022, AuScope brought the experience of imaging Earth to life through a self-guided digital experience called Immersive Earth. Please get in touch if you would like AuScope to come to you—IRL or online!
