Today we’re celebrating a significant step towards delivery of FAIR data across the earth and environmental sciences after Nature Communications published an article titled “Make scientific data FAIR” overnight.

We congratulate co-author, and long-time collaborator of AuScope, Dr Lesley Wyborn, on her very important contribution to open science and collaboration in global geoscience.

The Nature Communications paper highlights an international commitment from various organisations including data repositories, publishers, research infrastructure providers, research institutions and academic societies to the FAIR data principles.

AuScope is proud to be one of the of the three Australian signatories of this commitment, along with NCI and ARDC, to the COPDESS Enabling FAIR Data Commitment Statement on which the paper is based.

FAIR data is data that meets standards relating to Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability.  Implementation of data management plans that are aligned with FAIR principles will significantly enhance collaboration, impact and return on research investment in coming decades.

This paper highlights changes that will affect not only the way AuScope delivers its data, but the way that all Australian earth science researchers will be required to publish in the future. As such, AuScope is currently investigating how we can help deliver FAIR data for researchers in Australia.
